Hscf Canteen Reviews
Review of the canteen: Their hours when I went are not accurate. Arrived at 9:20 on Saturday and they didn't open until 10. Many of the items weren't ready yet but those that were ready were delicious. I ordered the idli vada and the samosa chaat. Generous portions and delicious.
(7/21/2018) Was invited to join a group of acquaintances for masala dosas at the temple's canteen. They're open to the public Friday nights, Saturdays, and Sundays. The food is delicious, like home-cooked southern Indian. The prices are beyond reasonable, especially for the portions. The volunteer ladies and gentlemen working the kitchen are hard-working. The little older lady in the back there is a pistol, like your hard-spirited Asian grandma. You best be at the window posthaste when your number is called, or be ready to hear an earful -- "get your food now, there's time for talking later." There's some def spice and meat in the samosas. The dosas, had them crispy, were light, eggy, crisp at the edges, really delicious with the spiced potatoes and coconut chutney (also spicy). Puri was steamed buns/cakes, soft, white, and fluffy, rather plain. The Sambar was savory and slightly tart, we ate it like soup (I know, like newbs). We went into the temple briefly with our host (who is Hindu), and stumbled across a wedding celebration. People were very nice, explained a few things, we felt welcome.
I have been going to this temple for a very long time. I have worked here in the past and I volunteer here from time to time. So it's safe to say that this place is very special to me. The architecture of the temple is beautiful. It is a multiple deity temple, which makes it more special as everyone is welcome here. There are four priests and all of them do a great job. The front office staff is always helpful for any bookings needed for puja's or facility. Yes...the temple rents it's community hall and small rooms for private events like weddings, birthdays or for taking classes. The highlight is the canteen which is open on weekends. The food is very reasonably priced and tasty. to enjoy completely you should go on Saturday as on Sundays they are pretty busy in the afternoons. Please don't mind the service and screaming at times... as most of the people in there are volunteers. They are doing seva...still they try to do the best they can. Overall, it's a beautiful and peaceful place. Recently they celebrated there 12 year anniversary with a big event Maha Kumbhabhishekam. Do visit when you are in the area.
I'll start out by saying I'm not Hindu, and yet this place was very welcoming to anyone and all!! Open to the public. The food was fresh and delicious and really reasonable in price. It feels good to spend money where it will be put to good use. The volunteers who serve and cook the food, like what they do, and it shows. This place tends to get packed quickly. Expect to stand in line and go early enough, because they will run out of food. They even ran out of masala tea when I was hoping to get another cup. It's basically food and drinks served until they run out. But it is THAT GOOD! The building is beautiful too as you drive in. They even have events and classes like free meditation and yoga (as shown on pictures). I haven't been to any as this is my first time going there, but I would be open to trying.
Today, for a Heartfulness Meditation class, I was pleasantly surprised to find a Hindu temple in the middle of Casselberry. I highly recommend the class, but of this temple I can only say it was very peaceful and quiet and calm and everyone I asked for assistance - because I so could not find the actual class - was very kind. I know next to nothing about Hinduism, but when you find a space like this and encounter a population that represents it so beautifully, you want to learn more. I had to be respectful of the "no pics" policy but, trust me, it's quite lovely here. Namaste
My family heritage is rooted in India, so I've been coming to this temple since way back in 2000 and golly, just visited here again after a 5 year break to find it's changed massively and for the better! The temple is grand and while the lord Balaji has center prominence, there are other deities also here like Durga, Ganesha. I also heard they imported craftsmen from India to do all the outside temple carvings and these are marvelous up close! BTW, The temple hours are: Monday thru Friday- 8:30 to noon and 5pm to 8:30pm Then on weekends it's 8:30am - 8:00pm The cafeteria is open Friday and then the weekends from 9 to 5. The Chinmaya foundation also has onsite buildings and you can find their class schedule on their website. The community at the temple is really great and you feel like you really are in India in the middle of an Orlando suburb! Note: #133 of Yelp 100 challenge for 2016
I think a lot of people would be amazed to know this temple exists right here in Casselberry. It's a beautiful sight to behold. Quiet and tranquil, you definitely feel at peace here. I photographed an engagement ceremony (not in the temple, but in a meditation building) and it was a lovely experience. I look forward to coming back here with my husband and also checking out the cafeteria. :)
Ok, this review I have to be a little sensitive with, because it is a place of worship and a completely different culture to my own. I went to the cafeteria here with my husband for lunch, which is a separate building from the actual temple itself, and I have to say this was a very cool experience. Yes, I did feel like a tourist and a little out of place, but everyone was very friendly and accepting of us non-hindus. We both had a dosa and yogurt rice. it was also served with a bowl of dal and some kind of dipping sauce which looked like it was tahini based, but was very spicy and tasty. For 12 dollars we got two giant dosas that were freshly prepared right when we ordered them, soft and crispy at the same time, very yummy, two (generous) portions of yogurt rice which was just delicious and fragrant, a delicious dal and two mango lassis which I kid you not, are the best I've ever had, served from a cooler. If you're feeling adventurous or just really hungry for the most authentic Indian food you can find, you might want to give this place a try. Granted this is not a big fancy restaurant with the nifty pictures of Indian women in garb and tikka masala you might be used to, but it is certainly worth noting because it is authentic, "homey" feeling and just down right good n plenty.
